Life has been so hectic

> 3 kg ikan patin

udang

Alhamdulillah, this semester has become to an end. This is the last week of the scheduled classes. It's winding down by now with only oral test and presentations. The students will have a week off before the final examinations begin the following week.

Even though, the students will have a much needed break to prepare for final examination, it is not the same for the lecturers. Now is the time to complete the markings and tally all the marks.

In comparison to last year where I didn't even have a chance to take a holiday due to busy scheduling, this year seems to be a bit relaxing. For once, I will have a chance to get away next week. So, this week is dedicated to complete all the carrymarks... then we plan to be off

First stop is KK, then Taiping, then Seberang Prai, then to Puchong, Bukit Jalil and Shah Alam, KL .... Felda Neram and back to KT.....

The last time my parents went to KL was in Dec07 when my sis was leaving to UK for further study. They are looking forward to this trip.

PPMSI

My father said he learned Ilmu kira-kira when he was in school during time before the Japanese occupation.

I learned maths in Malay. First, it was called Ilmu Hisab. Then it was changed to Matematik Moden. When I was in form 4, I had Matematik Tambahan. My Matematik Tambahan teacher was a contract teacher from Indonesia by the name of Mr. Sachlin. He tried his very best to teach in Malay but after a few sentences of struggling to explain in Malay, he would resort to explaining in English language. During the first calculus test, I scored 3 out of 40. Another boy scored 1 and the rest of the class, 42 in all got zero. I went to see him many times for extra explanation since whatever he explained during class time would flew me by. At that time, I began to conceive the idea that Matematik Tambahan is a very difficult subject. I even conceived the idea that he didn't care if we understood what he had taught or not as long as he come to class to teach and mark our homework intermittently as a proof that he had done his job so that he can get his salary every month.

In the middle of the year, I transferred to another school mainly because I was worried about my academic performance. Till mid year, we still had no Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English language teacher. Being a rural school, we would be lucky to have an English language teacher to teach at all during the examination years. At the new school, Matematik Tambahan was taught in Malay and by a very dedicated teacher. He would explained 3 or 4 times without a complaint until he recognised that flickers of light reflected by our eyes that we had finally understood what he has been repeating. What I understood, I taught it to other classmates. After the class, we would have homework and I would complete the homework during recess time. After recess, my friend would come asking for the answers. Normally, I would ask them to try to do it on their own first then only I would show them the way to solve the problems. Somehow, I managed to get A2 for Moden Matematik and C6 for Bahasa Inggeris and a P7 for Calculus. Honestly, I didn't know what I was doing. To have a passing grade was good enough back then because only a handful would pass.

Then, I did grade 13 and all the language of instruction was in English. Later, I studied in the USA. After a decade away, I came back to teach English at a rural school before continuing my study. I was asked to help out to teach Matematik during a school holiday. That was a nightmare. I discovered that most of the terminology has been changed. I had problem explaining to the students. However, the students had no problems since they were used to the new terms.

PPMSI is a spear with multiple prongs as a tool in a battle to the future. To help students to master Mathematics at the tertiary level since most of the reference materials are found only in the English language, to help strengthened the grasp and proficiency in the English language and to head-start the country towards the mastery, control, authority and domination of modern technologies.

It is mainly the teachers who are facing the problems. Many of whom have had schooling in Malay language teaching and learning since the shifting of policy to all Malay medium of instruction in the early 70s. To my disappointment, a couple of years before I started grade one, there was this change of policy implemented. Being interested in the English language long before I started schooling, I could only console my self that if there is a will, there will be a way. I struggled hard to get by in the English language class. Yes, learning English language wasn't an easy task. We had no teacher, no English reading material other than the textbook, no one to practice the English language with and the only exposure for listening was through the radio, the half hour news in the English language on TV and the late 60 and early 70s TV series. Around 4 p.m., our house would be blasted from the BBC radio programme. But by 5:30 p.m. we must listen to the talk on Islamic aqidah, manners and qur'an on the tape or the nasyid because that was the deal we made with our parent. Then, by 6:30, everyone must take a bath and ready for solat. After Isya' we would have dinner and then TV. By then, most of my brothers and sisters would already be asleep. As a kid, I enjoyed those Combat, Gemini Man, Lost in Space, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, Space 99, etc. By then, I graduated to Dallas and thought Space 99 and even the star trek were for the kiddie. And I was only 11 years old then. Many of my friends were watching Tayangan Minggu Ini or Hiburan Minggu Ini. Probably that's why today I still don't know much about Tan Sri P Ramlee's movies. While my friends were happy to begin schooling in Malay, I was disappointed.

Many didn't care much about the English language. I on the other hand went through the trouble of going to the state library on Saturdays ever since I was in standard 6. By form 2, I was reading the PhD thesis and research papers in the reference section on the second floor. Then I began to go to town and wait in front of Istana Maziah as early as 8 in the morning and waited for 'mat saleh'. Once I spotted them, I'd go and introduce my self and inform them right away of my intention to walk along with them and practice speaking the English language along the way. I'd walk along as long as my tiny legs could carry me. It was hard to keep up with the long legged mat or mek saleh. Normally, I'd walk along to Pasar Payang, went inside and off to Kampung Cina. By the time we reached Kedai Binjai, I would be exhausted and couldn't walk anymore. Restoran Kedai Binjai seemed like a nice restaurant to stop for a cold syrup and a nasi campur. Sometime, my new found friends would join me for a coke or pepsi before they continue on their foot. I was doing it all alone and none of my friends were willing to come along as they all thought that it was really a crazy thing to do.

Even then, many of of the friends who were studying in the USA still were not using much of the English language other than what's necessary. Many of them are teaching Mathematics and Sciences in the schools today. With any skills, if you don't use it, you'll loose it. English language is a skill. And I found out even after 10 years abroad and another 5 years teaching and learning in the English language, now after 8 years coming back to live in Kuala Terengganu, I'm loosing it slowly. Funny but true, I had a friend, a native speaker, born and raised in the USA who only came to live in Malaysia in her early twenties who was loosing her tongue. At the beginning, she kept going back and forth to the USA every few years but then there was a stretch of 5 years in a row that she didn't go home. That was the time when she kept referring back to me for words that are normally used in the USA.... She had the words in Malay but had forgotten the English word for it. Well, it wasn't really the case. The words were just slow to come to her head. Since I was there, she just asked me since she called me as her walking dictionary.

The case in point is that even in my case who have always been interested to learn the language, studied in the USA, came back teaching in the language, whom my American friends said had achieved near native fluency with distinct accent, after 8 years in an environment where the language is not much in practice --> a.k.a. Kuala Terengganu --> my language skills degenerate but hopefully my feeling and intuition remain intact.

Thinking back about what my colleagues said in the schools on how they dreaded the days when they would eventually have to teach in the English language after going into sciences and mathematics for the loathe of the English language.

I hear fear talking out?

In my mind, they would need more than just a few exposure to the language of instruction. First, there must be an attitude change. Then, there must be a real effort at re-immersing into the English language and specifically, the language of instruction. Not just the standard, Now listen pupils, today we are going to learn about the Phythagoras theory and how it we can use it to solve problems, great! so far, so good!!! you all are doing just great! Now, who can tell me where Phythagoras came from? In which country did he live?....... bla-bla-bla-bla....

The government wants PPMSI, parents want PPMSI, students want PPMSI, but...... nationalists do not want PPMSI and our beloved country Malaysia is the home of nationalists. Being a Malay or a Chinese or a Tamil means you speak malay, chinese or tamil but you should not learn Mathematics and Sciences in the English language.

Horray! Horray! Horray!

The country divide is a sure way to doom. The rest of the world is facing the economic downturn but here we worried about PPMSI and political drama that rival soap opera.

PPMSI is politicised thus everything can only be seen through the political glasses. If you wear a blue sunglasses then everything has a tinge of blue. Then try to put on a red or yellow or green sunglasses and surely you see things accordingly. If you combine all the primary colours, what shade do you get?

Alahai, gelap gulita alam maya ini !!!!!

Take off your sunglasses, your shade and take a look at the beautiful world. Allah made things in every colour! So why insist of having just one colour?

God is great!

ECER-KPT-UDM

Pusat Kecermerlangan ECER-KPT-UDM has organised a one day seminar on Halal Certification and Registration of Herbal Products on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Primula Hotel, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

The participants of seminar are from the SME entrepreneurs from the east coast region. ( I met and talked to a lady from Gua Musang who is doing frozen food supply).

Three speakers from various organizations speak about introducing ECERDC, steps on registering and getting proper certification of herbal products and Halal certification process. The highlight of the seminar is the opening ceremony and the witnessing of MOU signing between the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) represented by its' chief executive, Dato' Jebasingan Issac John and the Universiti Darul Iman Malaysia (UDM) represented by Vice Chancellor Dato' professor Dr. Alias Daud by the state of Terengganu Chief Minister, Datuk Ahmad bin Said.

In the afternoon, a briefing by the dean of the Faculty of Food Technology, Professor Madya Che Abdullah Che Mat and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Professor Dr Abdul Manaf Ali is held at The Theater Hall at the Kota Campus, Universiti Darul Iman Malaysia on the laboratory facilities available for product testing.

on a personal note, being the MC for the seminar, for the first time, I feel all alone in the big universe. The event started late and there is no mean of communication and other persons in-charge of the seminar to be consulted on the running of the event. I decide to cut the slot for sharing experience session with 2 successful entrepreneur since I was told to do so during the rehearsal and thus wrap the event five minutes before noon to allow time for the preparation of the opening ceremony. I have gathered my handbag, laptop bag, camera and scarf to make a move out of the hall before the opening ceremony begin only to be informed to continue since the opening ceremony is supposedly to be 30 minutes late. It isn't 5 minutes later, the V-VIP entourage is seen walking into the hall. I had to cut the poor Pok Heng's talk short, practically chase him off the stage with hand motion signaling him to get off the stage.

By then, I cannot make my move to get out anymore. I'm surrounded by the cameramen and the side alley is practically blocked by many tripod being placed strategically. I put down my bag and take the camera out and stand there for some shot.

Reflection in the glass window

Lyric - We Will Not Go Down - Song for Gaza - by Micheal Heart

Just got wind of this song through a phone call and requests for MP3 download.

Thinking about using this lyrics for phonetic transcription practice in class tomorrow

WE WILL NOT GO DOWN
(Song for Gaza)
(Composed by Michael Heart)

A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over Gaza tonight
People running for cover
Not knowing whether they’re dead or alive

They came with their tanks and their planes
With ravaging fiery flames
And nothing remains
Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night
While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who’s wrong or right

But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

HERE IS THE SONG ON YOU-TUBE:

Assalamu'alaykom! Nice To Meet You All Again!

Have we met before?

It's been such a long time since my last entry.

I started to get upset when it took such long time to upload the photos and at the same time I had an invitation from an old friend to join Flickr. I discovered how quick it was to upload the photos to Flickr.... More and more, I found my self spending most of my time there.

Now, I'm thinking to update my entry on a regular basis.

How irony it is because even right now the image uploading is temporarily disabled due to maintenance and will be back shortly.... according to message.....

If You Ask Me...

On the matter of Teaching of Science and Math in English, I'd say, stick it with the English language. Personal experience taught me that its is better after having to switch from English to Malay and English again at the University and having to teach in Malay once again! It's not easy to switch one terminology that has been ingrained in my brain to another that is totally new.... It felt somewhat unreal, hypocritical and problematic.

Also, I wish the Education Ministry does not change the approach to English language teaching and learning every few years... from the grammatical approach of the 70's to the functional notational and tried out communicative approach for a couple of years and back to functional notational and now a mixed of everything.

The half baked idea does not really produce the expert or even the Jack of all trade master in none.

Yet, I might be biased because I teach the language.

By Bernama

The teaching of science and mathematics in English should be continued to ensure Malaysian students, especially the Malays, are not left behind, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He said the change to teach the two subjects in English from Bahasa Malaysia was to ensure students could master them and at the same time become more proficient in English, the number one language in the world.

“It is not aimed at neglecting Bahasa Malaysia. Furthermore, most publications on science and mathematics are in English. “Take for example the cellular phone. If foreigners manufacture them equipped with cameras and the short-messaging facility but the manual is in English, can we used our science which is in Bahasa Malaysia to make the same hand phone? By the time we are done with the translation we will be left far behind,” he said at the “Malay Dilemma” discourse organised by the National Writers Association (Gapena) here today.

He also cited the dark ages of the Arabs where they had to learn everything from the Greeks.

“Obviously they could not ask the Greeks to translate their knowledge into Arabic. The solution then was for them to learn Greek so that they could have access to the knowledge in their possession. By doing this, the Arabs became a progressive race,” he said, adding that the same applied in the current scenario in the country.

He also said being proficient in two languages was a great asset and cited himself as an example.

“I studied in a Malay school for two years before my father transferred me to an English school. Thereafter all my education was in English.

“Did I lose my ability to use Bahasa Malaysia? It will not signify the end of the Malay race if we are to learn in English as well,” he said.

Lately, it's been raining a lot. So when the sun was finally out the other day, we seized the chance. Went out for a jog at the Taman Awam Batu Buruk and stopped by the beach before we went home.

Today is my last class at the public library. Yippee yeah!!! I'm so glad that it i finally over! But I can't really celebrate yet because I still have a mountain of papers to mark as the grade is due by the end of the month. Then there is the Module for this course that is just ended to be ready by December 14... Only then, i can truly be free. Now, I'm sitting on the idea of joining the faculty members for a trip to Bangkok at year end. If only Tokki and tok ibu would come along, then Jr can come too! I don't want to take him along if it's just only me. Papa Abdrahmaan would never join another train ride to Bangkok after what he had experienced many decades ago... ... It was really killing his back! He said that he would join if we fly there! That's an idea.... Us flying there and joined them in Bangkok

We made some kerepek pisang over the wekend too!!!

pisang putar (pisang awak)

slice them

bathe em in sugar water

deep fry em.... don't forget to stir em up from time to time....

kerepek pisang.... banana chips!!! yummy!

Now, here are some flora and fauna around our house.

mulberry

whatchamacallit flower.... have been asking a lot of people for the name of this flower but so far none can help .... can you?

papaya flower

bunga nasi kerabu a.k.a bunga telan

bunga misai kuching

The other day, Jr went across the street and joined the "Big Boys" playing football.

Hasta la vista, till we meet again! Ila Liqaa...., Sehingga jumpa lagi~
It's sure a plus to know many languages... but for us teaching Math and Sciences in English language is still a problem to some quarters...... How sad

Too many topics in this entry and i choose to comment on languages.
If people ask me I would suggest that all major languages should be taught in school. I envy my friends who can converse in several languages.
Imagine a Malay student can only converse in Enlish and Bahasa while his counterparts can speak chinese and/or Tamil. So teach communication chinese and tamil in primary school in addition to arabic.
Vision - a multilingual malaysian society.

mmm... banjir dah ok! our two bathrooms at the back had water bubbled out from underneath and flooded the bathroom and the adjacent room but only for about 20 minutes. The water recede as quickly as it came in.... alhamdulillah, air tak masuk dalam rumah coz dia naik kat parking ajer...

on language, yes I agree with you.... I think that it is time our school system offer different languages to be studied at school. For starters, Bahasa Mandarin.

Dah lama nak blajar bahasa mandarin tapi tak kesampaian lagi. sebelah ofis saya ada dua orang guru mandarin berasal dari negara China... belum ada peluang mengadap lagi

The Unthinkable

Besides the will and testaments issue, this topic in "Pena Mufti" is another that I ponders on....

In the old days, at the time of the Prophet SAW, anytime a person has a problem, he or she can just go and see the prophet for immediate answer.

In some traditional society, the learned one help to make decision and it comes to effect immediately.

Now in modern day Malaysia with its' thirteen states, we have different syariah law being implemented in each state.

I've heard people lamented, "Nak kahwin susa, nak bercerai berai lagi susah".... but off course it has a double meaning... or triple or quadruple .... depends on how or from which angle you are looking at it.

Quote:
Tanda-tanda dunia kita mula terbalik

(Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah, I'lam al-Muwaqqi'in, 3/3, Beirut: Dar al-Jail).

Apabila kes ingin diangkat kepada Nabi SAW, baginda mendapati ternyata anak berkenaan jelas menyerupai 'Utbah bin Abi Waqqas, saudara Sa'd.

Fikiran anda jangan terbalik!

Inner growth: Practise positive thinking

It appears that Man has lost his conscience and self-respect.

Selfishness rules most relationships. Even families have become devoid of love and its place has been taken over by expectations and demands.

There has been a rapid fall in the standards of public, professional and private morality.

Now more than ever before, we need honesty, the spirit of service and a sense of responsibility in our professional conduct, humane feelings towards the weak, and compassion for the deprived and the dispossessed.

Do we wish for a better society? Can we do anything? Or, do we merely grumble and complain?

When we co-operate with each other and make a concerted plan of action with a good and sincere heart, we can come together as a group. The world will only become a better place when people with vision make a combined effort.

Never allow loss to interfere with your long-term goal. Meet failure with courage and determination. Be an optimist and practise positive thinking.

As you think, so will you become. Courage is inner stability, keeping deep peace inside. This is our natural nature. Restore this.
