Jr's 4th Birthday

View all 6 photos...
It was on Thursday.

I had a seminar till 4 p.m.

I rushed home as fast as I could.

But first, there was a must stop that I must make first.

First for the cake! I stopped by the bakery in the morning and paid for the cake. The Ben10 cake just stared and screaming at me to take him home.

Jr would love it... He is so much into Ben10 lately

It turn out that even his birthday presents were of some sort of Ben10 theme....

an univited guest

It's finally over...

Jr was 20 kg and 3 feet and 8 inches tall... most people would think that he is in standard one already...quite tall compare to the rest at the TADIKA...

fav cartoon ... Ben10

fav drink... milk

fav food ... muffin

Jr is 4 years old today!

Finally he is off the nappy, during day time at least!

It is only for the last week or so.

He still insists on wearing it before he goes to bed.

You can also can reason with him a little bit.

He can put words into sentences.

From the hour spent at the kindergarten early this year, he learns to use scissors.

He is learning to hold pencil, but he prefers to type the alphabets on the keyboard.

I got him one of those magnetic writing board since he has a hard time writing in practice books.

He can sing the ABC song, humpty dumpty, twinkle twinkle little star, row row your boat and ensy winsy spider. He learned those through DVD's and you-tube.

He has been writing the alphabets on and off in a practice book. It is hard since he still prefers to "eat" papers and ripped off pages off the book.

He likes to play with blocks, airplanes and dinosaurs.

He still drinks milk everyday.

When asked, "how are you?", he replied "I'm wonderful today" or "I'm fine"... learnt it on you tube too.

When asked "how old are you?", he replied, "I'm fine, thank you!"

When asked "what is your name?", he replied, "I'm Aman" or "I'm handsome boy"

When asked, "where do you live?", he replied, "rumah tokki! "...

When asked, "where is Allah?", he replied, "Up there, in heaven, in the sky!", pointing to the ceiling.

Happy birthday Aman the handsome boy
May Allah always bless you

Jr's 4th Birthday is coming up!

We have been discussing about Jr's next birthday which will be on Thursday.

We want to have it outside the house.

But, Tokki might be on duty.

I'm not keen on delaying it.

Khairi will have to attend his qur'an class at 5 pm.

Let's say if we were to go out and have a picnic on the beach somewhere, Tokki will be in a rush and Khairi will have to miss his qur'an class.

It is better to have it at the house.

Better yet, we order in chicken bucket from KFC and have the birthday celebration outside our house.

It is still outside, Tokki won't be in a rush, Khairi will not have to miss much of his qur'an class and Tok Ibu don't have to cook.

Or perhaps, we could afterall delay it to Saturday morning so that we could have a picnic at Masjid Terapung, Chendering....

ISTANA MAZIAH

Istana Maziah is one of the must visit for tourists in Kuala Terengganu.

I have plenty of vivid memory associated with the place.

As a kid, I used to sit under those big trees waiting for my father or grandmother or granduncle while they were off to the market or sip coffee in the cafe across the street.

Once in a blue moon we would get invited for a 'jamuan rakyat' on the palace ground during the sultan's birthday celebration or the inauguration.

During one of those dinner, I was invited to the palace to be a playmate to the sultan's young prince- (the current Agong - I thought that he was barely 8 years old - he looked small and frail back then but actually he's close to be 10 -I heard someone was saying) - However, my grand-auntie politely decline after I said no. Nonetheless, I had countless hours running around the palace ground and sitting under those big trees. I really enjoyed it so much probably because I was left on my own and the guard would let me in because he knows my grand-auntie who from time to time would be going into the palace for something - (I think she supplied 'ma'ajoon' - and ladoo)...

Then the other day I had a chance to walkabout the town and couldn't resist taking a few shot at the old palace ...

SENDUDUK

For a while, it was hard to find this plant around. Thus, it was suggested that we plant some around the house. Now, after the rainy season, it begins to flower.

The plant has many medicinal purposes. One of many that I know of is has a anticoagulant property or blood thickening effect to stop external bleeding.

Just pick a few shoots and crush em using your fingers and place em on the cut where it bleeds.

TL English

The old fashioned qur'anic class held in homes and masjids just to learn the qira'at al-qur'an.

We learn the Qur'an the phonic way by learning the phoneme of Arabic alphabets, the monothong, diphthongs, the stress and intonation and different rhythm. That has been the way for many Malay Muslims. Here the learning is primarily by listening and saying but devoid of meaning. Meaning comes later with the interpretation and explanation of the qur'anic text called tafsir.

In learning the English language, it's the other way around. It is true that roman Alphabets is introduced early on and this is not a problem since the Malay language has adopted the roman alphabets since early 1900?. The objectives are primarily to spell and to apply in writing. We know that spelling system in English language is not consistent and then there are variations in the American or the British way. Phonics is an alien concept for many. We learn English language by memorizing the vocabulary and learning about the grammar. The pedagogical approach have gone through so many swings from grammar translational approach to grammar approach to notional functional approach to Communicative approach and back to notional and functional approach and now ??? Listening and speaking has never been much practiced. The focus is more on reading and writing.

Could it be timely that the phonetics be given more emphasis in Teaching and learning English language?
